Statement on Freedom of Expression

We uphold the right of all to experience diverse visions and challenging views even if these may, at times, offend.

We recognise the privilege of living in a country where creating, exhibiting and experiencing artworks is protected by fundamental human rights enshrined in UK law.

Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998 reads: Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers.

The right to freedom of expression is part of the wider right to take part in the public exchange of cultural, political and social information and ideas of all kinds. Anyone creating and showing works of art is considered to be contributing to the free exchange of ideas, which is essential for any democratic society.

Consistent with our fundamental commitment to freedom of expression, we do not censor works, or self-censor, in response to political or ideological pressure.

Should controversy arise as a result of works shown in the spirit of freedom of expression, we welcome public discussion and debate. We believe such discussion is integral and valuable to the overall experience of the art.
